How To Persuade Others

Do you have a hard time convincing people of your point of view ? Do you think you could be more effective if you were more persuasive? Well, people are not born persuasive, it's a skill that must be developed. Here are four tips to help you do that.

Don't focus on facts at the expense of emotions.
Too often when we try to convince someone of something, we just throw a bunch of facts at them. This doesn't work, because people are not computers. You can't load them up with facts and expect them to draw the same conclusions you have. Try to connect with people emotionally, as well. Try to show people how what you are talking about is important to them.

Don't try to do too much.
If you are trying to persuade someone of something important, don't try to do it all at once. Convincing people takes time. You need to present your arguments, listen to responses, do more research, meet again, listen again, and so on. Trying to do everything in one meeting or memo rarely works.

Always find a compromise.
Most people fail to persuade someone to do something because they refuse to compromise. When you ask someone to do something, ask for input at the same time. Work out a solution that works for both parties.

Avoid the hard sell approach.

If someone senses that you are trying to force them into something, they will resist on impulse. Don't push your ideas on other people. Lay out your ideas, and let people come to their own conclusions. If you do it right, they will usually come to the conclusion you want them to.
