How To Handle A Crisis

By Dennis Sommer (www.dennissommer.com)

Crisis or disaster strikes, are you ready for it? Whether it is a business disaster or one of a personal nature, you can train yourself to react calmly and decisively to what ever situation confronts you. Here are some key actions to follow.

1. Prepare for the worst even as you hope for the best. Try to think ahead and plan a response for anything that could go wrong. Envisioning worst case scenarios will help keep you on your toes, which will help you even if the crisis that erupts is not one you anticipated.

2. Resist the temptation to plunge into action before examining the situation thoroughly. Even in the most dire circumstances, you can actually afford time to look things over before deciding what to do.

3. Do not try to confront the crisis halfheartedly. Once you have made up your mind, move forward confidently. Experts compare this to getting on a fast moving freeway. Approach slowly enough to take in the situation, then accelerate firmly to enter the traffic flow safely.

4. You will wear yourself out mentally and emotionally if you try to handle the problem all by yourself. Call in the people most qualified to help you, before the crisis grows out of control.

5. Details are important, but do not become so obsessed with the minute details that you forget about the overall big picture that needs addressing.

6. Denying that a problem exists will ultimately cost you time and credibility. Answer questions accurately. If you do not know the answer, say so, and try to find out.

7. It may seem overwhelming now, but a problem sometimes masks an opportunity you overlooked before. Keep your mind open to new ideas and possibilities.
