How To Determine If An Employee Is Ready For Promotion

Promoting an employee prematurely can cause no end of problems for you, your organization, and the employee. Ask yourself these questions when you consider promoting an employee.

The more questions you answer “Yes”, the better the chances for the promotion to succeed.
  1. Is the employee performing present duties well enough to justify a promotion?

  2. Is the employee experienced and qualified to do at least part of the new job and reasonably quick to learn?

  3. Is the employee willing to hand over current responsibilities to a new person?

  4. Is the employee enthusiastic about taking on a new role?

  5. Is the employee familiar with the new position, its responsibilities and priorities?

  6. Is the employee proficient in the interpersonal skills necessary to work with others in a new role?

  7. Is the employee adequately trained or willing to be?

  8. Is the employee prepared to bow out gracefully if the promotion does not work out as planned?
